I have very much been enjoying the 'Only the Old Songs' videos. I have an ever-changing playlist that I play in the kitchen when I am making dinner and I had been adding the references and influences to that playlist. Then, last week, viewers were encouraged to go and listen to the songs mentioned and I said "way ahead of you". Not out loud. I'm not that bad. Today I am going to give some Steve McEwan songs a go, so thanks!
I will probably not, however, be adding Grace. I love that song so much but I can't make it through without the tears coming. In 2013 my sons were born at 24 weeks and had 6 months in hospital. The song may have been written about something else but I challenge any of you to tell me what part does not work when applied to looking at your tiny baby hooked up to machines. Thankfully, both kids did hold on and now they're stuck with an embarrassing dad who talks back to YouTube videos and cries to songs while chopping the vegetables.
Oh oh oh. What to say? I know exactly what you mean - some songs, The Suburbs by Arcade Fire, do to me what Grace does to you, for sadly very similar reasons. I am a mix of sad and honoured that my song means that to you.
Steve has written for all sorts of huge country stars like Faith Hill etc., but in around 2002/3 he had a band called UnAmerican and they made a very fine album I think that you will like. He’s a wonderful, wonderful songwriter and a great human being.
Ha! The Suburbs made it to the playlist after you talked about 'Happy' if I remember correctly.
Also, I just listened this morning to a Daisy Ridley interview and she said she felt weird saying "thank you" when people say "I loved you in 'Young Woman and the Sea' - I was in floods of tears". I should make you a list of songs of yours that have made me cry over the last 20 years!
Welcome back, Nerina. What an eventful year. Congratulations on the new album and the show. I'm glad the sky did not fall! And I love the song, Grace. Just listened to it as I read this.
I can see why you covet a large house in the Highlands. That looks stunning.
And while you await grace, or whatever her name is, I'm still waiting for Emily, because Canada Post decided the month of November is perfect for a strike .I still haven't heard so much as a note, because I do that thing....But it's getting more tempting to just listen online. Oh well! Christmas or bust!
Spooky, I read that Reddit thread too; the snake comment was inspired. Loving the Old Songs videos, I have to re-listen to each song afterwards, with new insight.

Thanks Wendy! I showed my husband that house and the first thing he said to me was ‘imagine the gas bill on that.’
That’s exactly what I thought!

Listen to it now Stewart ..
Life’s too short to not be enjoying a majestic album

A very uplifting Substack thank you and I will search out your Grace old song video and Steve McEwan
Spotify owes you a few pennies according to my year end summary so maybe look for a static caravan ?
Loving Psalm and hoping your great streak of form is taking you higher still if that’s possible
So many intriguing rooms in your mind, Nerina. Thank you for continuing to open some of the doors for us! Really enjoyed the Grace insight. 👌
Good luck with the Euromillions draw, although I think it maybe my week. 🤞❤️
