Hello dear reader And, if I send this in time, a very happy New Years Gregorian (2022) and Chinese (Tiger). If you were born in the year of the carrot, I can’t help you. Sorry. I regularly think about writing you newsletters more often. But I lack discipline and focus and frankly nearly everything these days annoys me and, as I suspect you might feel the same, why should I bother you with my neuroses when you are labouring with your very own? Therefore, I have pledged that from now on it’s important to be of service. So today I’d like to turn your attention to dogs in European fine art in the fifteenth century, pork pies and why the NHS is not broken.
Ever thought of visiting a little place in London called The National Gallery. It’s bizarrely full of paintings. Even better is the Summer Exhibition!!!… no need to thank me… I’m full of useless stuff
You don't write often, but each one is a delight. We feel the same way about free health in Canada. They can use all the scare tactics they want, but we have peace of mind, because our next hospital visit won't put us in the poorhouse.
Art is subjective, so it's not just a domain of the wealthy. I see art everywhere and it enriches my life. I don't need to own more, but will if I can afford it.
None of us would ever snitch on you to your mother about your eating habits!
I've never really understood the traditional adherence to the great masters of art; it's all too subjective, too establishment, too divisive. We should be free to appreciate whetever art we like without being looked down upon. I'm always reminded of Neil Gaiman's speech - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikAb-NYkseI - "make good art".
PS A little disappointed not to see a painting of a pork pie!
Thanks for your lovely newsletter! Quite good insights into the art business you share. And a worthy praise for free healthcare. Thank goodness the UK is still European despite some arguments and stuff. Cheers! Take care!
Ever thought of writing a novel? I read this and thought of a modern day Bridget Jones thing. Loved it, it put a broad smile on my face after a trying day...I say trying...playing songs on a radio show in the morning and driving to my brothers to deliver a dinosaur if that is a trying day.
That is a magical thing in these times - I agree entirely with you view on art…. Seems like years ago when you could buy art that you loved that spoke to you without it being ‘sponsored’!
New album… what about some signed editions… could be potential money spinner… come on Mrs Pallot… I’ve got loads of dosh which will pay off the Harpist!
Eye eye, pork pie.
"That’s nothing. I once admitted someone who’d detached their retina with a pork pie.’" :-
And he looked up in pained surprise
As the concrete hardened crust
Of a stale pork pie caught him in the eye
And Ernie bit the dust
Poor Ernie (Ernie)

Oh & I love dogs too! ; )
To me art is anything that's pleasing to the eye.

You write as well as you make music. Get a column in a newspaper, please do

Lovely piece, you write well. I guess you have read John Berger's Ways of Seeing? if not do check it out. Even better watch the original TV series.
Delightful, funny, and on point, as always. Thank you.
Cheers! Here’s mud in your eye… oh wait
You make me laugh!

Life however needs to be funny and positive!
